Summary

After firing his staff and cutting himself off from all help, Angel begins intense physical and mental training to become strong enough to stop Darla and Drusilla before they destroy the City of Angels. Meanwhile, Cordelia, Wesley, and Gunn try to continue the good fight on their own now that Angel has abandoned the cause.

Plot

The episode begins with Cordelia, Gunn, and Wesley all carrying boxes of their stuff out of the offices. They stand outside for a while and discuss being fired. Cordelia is upset and blames Darla. Gunn pretends that it doesn’t bother him. Wesley tries to act understanding. The three of them walk away in different directions. Inside, Angel is seen throwing his drawings of Darla into a furnace.

Angel then begins his training by working out. An Angel voiceover talks about getting prepared and how he is not yet ready.

Lindsey awakens among the carnage at Holland’s house. He at first appears to be the only survivor, but the paramedics find that Lilah is alive, too.

Meanwhile, Wesley is with Virginia who is talking to him about being fired. She tries to cheer him up by telling him he can get another job easily. When she asks him what else he can do, he is at a loss.

Angel continues his training while the voiceover talks about “it” being time. He descends into the sewers and says that while he is not yet on “their” level, he can get there.

Back at Wolfram & Hart, Lindsey and Lilah discuss how they are both under suspicion for being the only survivors of the massacre at Holland’s house. They both know that one of them will be used as a scapegoat. When they reach the office, Drusilla and Darla are waiting for them. Darla tells Lindsey that she spared them so they could provide her with money and contacts to help them be big players in the town. When Lindsey asks if she is planning on using that power to get back at Angel she gets upset and denies it.

Angel hides in the sewers and ambushes a group of vampires. He defeats them easily, beheading the last one. The voiceover says that he is ready.

Wesley shows up at the demon karaoke bar, prepared to sing. He runs into Cordelia, and both confess to wanting to sing after a few denials. Gunn happens to show up, too, and they all feel pathetic.

Angel interrogates a demon about Darla and Dru by dunking him in water. The demon says that the girls are looking for other demons to be a part of some kind of crew and tells Angel where they might go next. Angel leaves the demon hanging upside down over the water.

Darla and Drusilla show up at some kind of demon brawl with a proposition. They explain that they are in need of muscle slaves. Dru senses that Angel is watching them and Darla gets mad at her for talking about him. Darla explains that a tournament will be held to help them select who will work for them. Angel goes outside and the voiceover says that he is not ready yet. He is still too close to Darla to fight her.

In the meantime, Lilah tries to get Lindsey to confess to stealing files by saying they should run off together. Lindsey doesn’t fall for it and pulls the recorder out of her shirt.

Cordelia, Gunn, and Wesley are all getting drunk at the bar when they begin blaming each other for what happened with Angel. In the midst of a heated argument, the scene switches to all of them on stage singing, “We are the Champions” off key. The scene switches back to them alone in the bar and at the table. They ask the lounge demon for guidance, but he says he shuts his yap when the big guys talk. Cordelia immediately has a vision of a demon dragging a hurt girl. The three of them leave to find her.

Angel is again getting ready, putting weapons in a bag. The phone is ringing and he ignores it.

Cordelia, Wesley, and Gunn find the girl’s blood in an alley. Wesley takes charge and says they need to help her, even without Angel. The trail of blood leads to the second floor of an abandoned building.

Drusilla and Darla leave a bar. They argue about Darla still missing Angel. Darla says that Angel should be with them to help wreak havoc on the town. Drusilla then sees a vision of a fire.

Cordelia, Wesley, and Gunn find the girl and manage to kill the demon after some fighting.

Darla and Drusilla go to where the tournament is to be held. When they open the door, they see all the demons are dead. Angel is sitting against a car, smoking a cigarette. He throws the cigarette down, igniting a trail of gasoline that ends up setting Darla and Dru on fire. They scream and put themselves out by breaking open a fire hydrant while Angel walks away. Darla tells Dru that it was not Angel or Angelus.

Some Wolfram & Hart bosses tell Lindsey and Lilah that neither of them is qualified to take over Holland’s position. They decide to give the job to both of them until they decide who should be eliminated.

Angel is throwing knives in the basement. Wesley comes down and tells him that they are keeping the agency open with or without him. The voiceover says to let them fight the good fight; someone has to fight the war.

Dialogue

CordeliaWhat just happened? Can someone explain to me what just happened here?
WesleyI believe we were fired.
GunnCanned.
WesleyLet go.
GunnAxed.
WesleyShown the door.
GunnBooted.
CordeliaAll right! I get it. But what just happened?
GunnYou got a thesaurus in there?
CordeliaDarla. It's all about Darla. One thing you can say about Angel, at least he's consistent - it's always some little blonde driving him over the edge.
V
VirginiaHe fired you? He can't do that, you're on a mission to protect the innocent. You can't fire someone on a mission. What did he say exactly?
WesleyYou're fired.
V
VirginiaOh.
V
VirginiaYou're a renowned specialist in supernatural aid and rescue.
WesleyNo, I'm just a… "renowned," really?
WesleyA Bloody Mary, please.
B
BartenderYou want real blood with that?
WesleyUh… no. Bloodless. Thanks.
WesleyI suppose we're both rather at loose ends, now that Angel's…
CordeliaPulled a total wig?
WesleyQuite.
GunnI don't know - if I had to listen to you two, day in, day out - snipe snipe snipe, bitch bitch bitch… I figure ya'll got off easy. I woulda killed you.
CordeliaOh, that's rich, coming from Mr. I-Don't-Take-Orders-Now-Where-Can-I-Stick-My-Axe.
GunnWhat's that supposed to mean?
WesleyWell, Gunn, you've never been very supportive of Angel's leadership role. I seem to recall a certain shroud…
GunnWas one of his directives "Hire pansy ass British guy?
WesleyMy ass is not pansy!
CordeliaEarth to retards - you have an obsession, you pretty much squeeze it into your schedule no matter what.
WesleyA ha! So you admit it's an obsession?
CordeliaNo! I mean, yes, but - no!
WesleyHypocrite!
CordeliaAss pansy!
CordeliaI don't get it - are we late? We didn't feel late in my head.
DarlaWhy is everyone trying to make this about Angel? For God's sake, can't a woman wreak a little havoc without there being a man involved?
D
DrusillaYou miss him. Like a heartbeat.
DarlaI don't miss my heartbeat, Dru. It was a symptom of a disease I've since been cured of. You know, in a perfect world, Angel would be here right now, helping me burn this city to the ground. This is his job I'm doing. But where is he? Probably flogging himself in a church somewhere.
DarlaThat wasn't Angel.
D
DrusillaHe's gone! He's all gone! Oh, it hurts… it hurts…
DarlaWasn't Angelus, either.
D
DrusillaHelp me…
DarlaWho was that?
