Summary

Angel, a vampire with a soul, arrives in Los Angeles. Having left Sunnydale and his true love Buffy (the Vampire Slayer) behind, Angel is searching for a place to call his own and a means to redeem himself for past sins as a brutal, malicious, bloodthirsty killer. Doyle, a half human, half demon, is sent to him by “The Powers That Be” to help him on his path. The Irish half-breed advises Angel to live among the people of the city so as to avoid losing his own humanity. Doyle also reveals that he has had a vision of a young girl in trouble, prompting Angel to go on his first mission to help the helpless. The girl’s name is Tina, and Angel learns that she is being stalked by a powerful vampire. As the investigation goes deeper, Angel learns that this creature preys on many aspiring actresses, and his latest target is an old friend from Sunnydale who has just arrived in the City of Angels.

Plot

Angel is in LA. He sits in a bar, apparently drunk, and watches a group of men playing pool with women. He senses something about them. They leave with the girls and Angel follows.

Outside, the men reveal their true nature as vampires. They are about to attack the girls when Angel intervenes. He stakes two immediately, but the third strikes Angel and he, too, goes vamp. Angel disables him by throwing him onto the windshield of a nearby car. The girls try to thank him, but Angel barks at them, "Get away from me." He grabs a piece of wood and stakes the vampire before disappearing down a long alley.

In his apartment below an office building, Angel lives a quiet, lonely life. But a man appears behind him. When Angel confronts him, he says his name is Doyle. He is a half-human, half-demon hybrid. And he knows all about Angel. He says that he receives visions from The Powers That Be. Doyle explains that he was directed to go to Angel. Angel is supposed to help the people in the visions from whatever threatens them. Furthermore, Doyle tells Angel that he's not really helping. He is so cut off from humanity that his demon-killing will only lead to apathy towards humans.
Doyle recently had a vision of a girl named Tina. And she's in trouble. Angel agrees to look into it.

Angel goes to a coffee shop where he meets Tina. She agrees to meet him after work, but threatens him, thinking that Angel is working for "Russell." Angel explains that he is not, but offers her a ride. Tina is going to a party and invites Angel along.

At the party, Tina goes to talk to some other people and Angel skulks through the crowd. He hears a familiar voice and finds Cordelia Chase talking with some people. Cordelia is happy to see Angel, but remains vain when she says she needs to talk to some people "that actually matter."

Angel sees Tina arguing with a man. She storms away and tells Angel she wants to leave. They take the elevator down and are jumped by the man and a few goons. They drag Angel back into the elevator and take Tina. After a moment, Angel steps out of the elevator and the cronies are knocked out. With a chase and a game of "Chicken," Angel gets Tina back and they flee.

Back at Angel's place, Tina tells Angel about Russell Winters. He is a powerful businessman who "loves pain." He uses his influence to get jobs and favors for girls. One of Tina's friends disappeared after a relationship with Russell. Angel comforts her.

Angel investigates Russell Winters and the string of disappearences around him. He finds that Tina's friend is dead. When he returns to the apartment, Tina is having a nightmare. Angel consoles her, but Tina sees the slip of paper Doyle wrote with her name on it. She thinks Angel lied to her and runs out. It's daytime and Angel can't follow. He accidentially goes vamp when a beam of light touches his hand and frightens Tina more.

At her place, Tina runs into Russell. He consoles her and tells her that he bought her friend a ticket home. He would do the same for her. But he turns into a vampire (one that has extraordinary vampire features) and bites her. Angel arrives too late. Tina is dead.

Russell Winters consults with his lawyer at his palacial mansion. His lawyer works for a firm called Wolfram & Hart. Russell watches video of the party Tina was at and sees Cordelia. He is interested.

Cordelia is not living the high life like she lets on. She is poor and living a meager existence in a crappy apartment. She receives a call from a contact of hers. An important man wants to see her -- Russell Winters.

Angel plans revenge. He packs a bag of weapons and prepares to attack Russell Winter's mansion. Doyle pleads with him to slow down, that it is suicide. But Angel is certain. Russell must pay.

Cordelia is at Russell's for maybe five minutes before she realizes that he is a vampire. She explains that she's from Sunnydale and they have their own Hellmouth. But now, Russell pursues her.

Angel shows up and fights Russell. Angel gets the advantage, but Russell's gun-toting goons shoot him. He and Cordelia barely escape. That night, Cordelia meets Doyle and pulls the bullets out of Angel.

The next day, Angel shows up at Russell's office and throws him out the window. His lawyer from Wolfram & Hart phones his firm and tells them, "A new player's in town."

Doyle tells Cordelia about Angel's mission and she decides to help Angel and be his secretary. She wants to charge a fee, though. Doyle tells Angel that there are a lot of people who need help in the city. He asks, "Are you game?" Angel considers.

Angel stands on a skyscraper over LA and discovers, "I'm Game"

Dialogue

>> City of...

AngelShe was a really, really pretty girl. No, she was a hottie girl.
Angel'Scuse me. I'm sorry. Has anyone seen my car? It's big and shiny.
AngelBreath mint?
DoyleWell, I like the place. Not much with the view, but it's got a nice Bat-Cave sort of an air to it.
AngelYou don't smell human.
DoyleWell, that's a bit rude. As it happens I'm very much human...on my mother's side.
DoyleI've been sent. By the Powers That Be.
AngelPowers that be what?
DoyleLet me tell you a little bedtime story.
AngelBut I'm not sleepy.
DoyleOnce upon a time there was a vampire, and he was the meanest vampire in all the land. All the other vampires were afraid of him, he was such a bastard. Then one day he's cursed by Gypsies. They restore his human soul and all of a sudden he's mad with guilt. You know, "What have I done." You know, he's freaked.
AngelOh, okay now I'm sleepy.
DoyleYeah, well it's a fairly dull tale. It needs a little sex is my feeling. So, sure enough enter a girl. Pretty little blond thing, vampire slayer by trade. And our vampire falls madly in love with her. But eventually, the two of them, well they get fleshy with one another, and the moment he...well I guess the technical term is 'perfect happiness', but when our boy gets there, he goes bad again. He kills again. It's ugly. So when he gets his soul back for a second time, he figures hey, he can't be anywhere near young miss puppy eyes without endangering them both. So what does he do? He takes off. Goes to LA, to fight evil and to atone for his crimes. He's a shadow. A faceless champion of the hapless human race.
AngelOkay, so you told me the story of my life. Which, since I was there, I already knew. Why aren't I kicking you out?
DoyleIt's not all about fighting and gadgets and such. It's about reaching out to people. Showing them that there's love and hope still left in this world.
H
Homeless WomanGot any spare change?
DoyleGet a job you lazy sow.
DoyleI get visions. Which is to say great splitting migraines that come with pictures.
AngelWhy would a woman I've never met even talk to me?
DoyleHave you looked in a mirror lately? No, I guess... you really haven't. No.
AngelI'm not good with people.
AngelSo, uh, are you.... happy?
T
TinaWhat?
AngelYou looked sort of down.
T
TinaYou've been watching me?
AngelNo, I just.... I was... uh... looking towards there. And you walked.... through there.
T
TinaYou don't hit on girls very often, do you?
AngelIt's been awhile.
AngelWhere's home?
T
TinaMissoula, Montana. You've been to Missoula?
AngelDuring the Depression. Uh, my depression. I was depressed there.
O
OliverYou are a beautiful, beautiful man.
AngelThanks.
O
OliverYou're an actor.
AngelNo.
O
OliverThat wasn't a question. I'm Oliver. Ask anyone about Oliver. They'll tell you I'm a fierce animal. I'm your manager as soon as you call.
AngelI'm not an actor.
O
OliverFunny. I like the humor. I like the whole thing. Call me. This isn't a come on. I'm in a very serious relationship with a landscape architect.
CordeliaSo, um, are you still.... "GRRR"?
AngelYeah, there's not actually a cure for that.
CordeliaWell, I better get mingling. I really should be talking to people that *are* somebody. But it was fun!
AngelIt's nice that she's grown as a person.
T
TinaNice party, huh?
AngelA little too fabulous for me.
AngelI made some tea.
T
TinaThanks.
AngelYou take milk and sugar?
T
TinaYeah.
AngelCuz, I don't have those things.
DoyleYou can't cut yourself off.
AngelDoyle, I don't want to share my feelings. I don't want to open up. I wanna find the guy that killed Tina, and I wanna look him in the eye.
DoyleThen what?
AngelThen I'm gonna share my feelings.
S
StacyYou have no idea who you're dealing with here.
AngelRussell? Let me guess. Not big on the daylight or the mirrors. Drinks a lot of V-8.
DoyleWow, you're really going to war here. I guess you've seen a few in your time, yeah?
Angel14. Not including Vietnam. They never declared it.
DoyleWell, listen, best of luck to ya man. I've got some fairly large coin riding on the Vikings tonight, but I'll be there with you in spirit, yeah?
AngelYou're driving.
DoyleWait a minute! No, no! I'm not combat ready, man. I'm just the messenger!
AngelAnd, I'm the message.
CordeliaOh god. I'm sorry. I'm getting all weepy in front of you. I probably look really scary. I finally get invited to a nice place with... no mirrors... and .... lots of curtains.... Hey, you're a vampire!
R
RussellWhat? No I'm not.
CordeliaAre too.
R
RussellI don't know what you're talking about.
CordeliaI'm from Sunnydale. We had our own Hellmouth! I think I know a vampire when I ... am... alone with him in his fortress like home, and I you know I think I'm just feeling a little light-headed from hunger. I'm just wacky! And kidding!
CordeliaYou don't know who he is, do you? Oh boy, you're about to get your ass kicked!
CordeliaFinally! I thought I was going to faint while barfing!
R
RussellAngel. We do things a certain way in L.A.
AngelWell I'm new here.
R
RussellBut you're a civilized man. We don't have to go around attacking each other. Look at me. I pay my taxes. I keep my name out of the paper. And I don't make waves. And in return, I can do anything I want.
AngelReally? Can you fly?...Guess not.
DoyleWhat happened to Russell?
AngelHe went into the light.
CordeliaCockroach. In the corner. I'd say it's a bantam weight!
CordeliaI was just saying that if we're going to be helping people out, maybe a small charge. A fee. You know something to help pay the rent. And.... my salary. You need someone to organize things and you're not exactly rolling in it Mr. I-Was-Alive-for-200-Years-and-Never-Developed-an-Investment-Portfolio.
AngelYou want to charge people?
CordeliaWell not everybody, but sooner or later we are going to have to help some rich people, right?
CordeliaOf course this is just temporary, until my inevitable stardom takes effect!
DoyleYou made a good choice. She'll provide a connection to the world. She's got a very ... humanizing influence.
AngelYou think she's a hottie.
DoyleAh, yeah, she's a stiffener alright. I can't lie about that.
DoyleYou know, there's a lot of people in this city that need helping.
AngelSo I noticed.
DoyleYou game?
AngelI'm game.
