Summary
Angel’s past deeds come back to haunt him as he dreams about killing again but when the dreams become identical to a number of murders in the area Angel fears that he is killing in his sleep.
Plot
Angel's having dreams in which he is ritually killing people. While asking Kate for some help on a case, he sees crime scene photos from a serial killer case Kate is working on. It's the same woman from his dreams. Wesley shows up at the office, stake in hand, and tells Cordelia that he believes Angel is the serial killer. He tells her that the MO of these murders perfectly matches crimes that Angelus committed in late 1700s. Cordelia defends Angel and orders Wesley out of the office. Angel tells them about the dreams he's been having. Wesley suggests that perhaps Angel is sleepwalking. Cordy and Wes chain Angel to his bed for the night to discover whether or not he's been committing these crimes.
Morning comes and another murder has been committed, leaving Angel is the clear. But thanks to the dream that Angel had that night, he realizes that the killer is Penn, a vampire that Angelus sired 200 years ago. Angel gives Kate a sketch of Penn and information on who he believes the next victim will be. Kate mobilizes the task force and they scour the streets based on Angel's information. Just as promised, Penn makes a move on a young man and the police give chase, cornering him in an abandoned warehouse. Kate goes in after him, shooting Penn three times. But when she goes to check the body, he sits up and throws her across the room. Angel and Wesley, listening on a police radio, arrive at the scene. Angel sneaks inside and confronts Penn. The two of them slip into game face and battle, as Kate looks on. Penn manages to catch Angel off guard and escapes.
At first, Kate is unwilling to face the truth but decides to research the possibility that this killer is a vampire and discovers a wealth of information. Penn visits Angel's office and he and Angel face off once more, during which Angel taunts Penn for being a 'cheesy hack' who has been committing the same crimes for 200 years. Angel tries to talk to Kate but she throws his past as Angelus in his face. Kate calls a Task Force meeting, which Penn crashes. He takes Kate captive and drags her into the sewer system, with Angel following closely behind. Angel and Penn face off in a vicious battle. Penn gets the upper hand tries to use Angel as a shield. Kate, gripping a huge piece of wood, thrusts the makeshift stake upward through Angel's stomach, piercing Penn's heart and reducing him to a pile of ash. In the aftermath, Cordy reassures Angel that he's a different person now. He's not Angelus anymore. And yes, she'll kill him in a heartbeat if he ever goes bad again.
Dialogue

Nobody likes a smart-ass rogue demon hunter.

And you? How go things on your end of the good fight?

I've been giving the hard sell to an empty chair. What do you think?

Something wrong? You stopped yammering.

Who were you talking to?

Nobody. And Wesley.

And, wow, you look half-dead. Which for someone who's completely dead would be...kinda neat?

Are you sure you're okay? I mean, for a guy who's 200 plus, you're not usually with the bags.
I'll run it myself. I'll have it for you by morning.

No rush. Late afternoon. Evening would be fine, actually.

What is that?

Just what it looks like.

Kinda rude coming into a vampire's place of business with one of those things, dont'cha think? Could be misinterpreted.

While executing my duties as Watcher in Sunnydale, I did extensive research, specifically on Angel...given his uncomfortable proximity to the Slayer.

He looked pretty comfortable to me.

Okay, you get to leave now. You're not gonna come in here and accuse Angel like this.

Cordelia.

No! I don't care how many files you have on all the horrible things that he did back in the powdered wig days. He's good now. And he is my friend. And nothing you or anyone else can say will make me turn on a friend!

Cordelia. He's right.

You stake him and I'll cut his head off.

I have no memory of doing these things.

Oh, not exactly the confidence inspiring denial I was looking for.

Vampires can't sleepwalk. He'd take one step out the front door and his PJs would burst into flames.

A glamorous LA life. I get to make the coffee and chain the boss to the bed. Gotta join a union.

Cordelia. I think that's tight enough.

And if it turns out we're back on the liquid lunch? Better safe than cocktails.

Pleasant...I mean, sleep tight.

That's pretty much a given.

I taught him well.

A real psycho-wan Kenobi.
Angel, are you okay? Not that the brooding, man of mystery think isn't working for you. I mean, it is. A lot.

Where'd you get the police radio?

Police car.

Oh dear!
We were to meet in Italy, remember?

I remember.
Well, I waited. Hell, I waited until the 19th century. What happened?

Got held up in Romania.
Romania. What's in Romania?

Gypsies.

People change.
We're not people.

Oh crap! You're him...he...the guy. Apt pupil boy.
Look who's back from his Up With People meeting.
How does that work exactly? You just wake up one morning and decide, "ok, now I'm good"?
I looked it up. It's all right there. The demon with the face of an angel. Particularly brutal bastard, by all accounts.

It's the same place. New name and a face lift. Not the first time that's happened in this town.

Oh, I invite you in.

Relax, that's only if you're humans. Breaking and entering another vampire's lair is no problem.
You're my real father, Angelus.

Fine! You're grounded.

I was just thinking about how much this place is like where I grew up.

Right. Yeah, I could see that except for the cars and the buildings and the, you know, everything else.

And sometimes they change back. The day ever comes that I...

Oh, I'll kill you dead.

Thanks.

What are friends for?
