Summary

Angel takes a job protecting a well-known actress from a crazed stalker. When a mirror happens to be in just the wrong place, however, she begins to suspect what he really is.

Plot

Wesley and Angel have been forced to witness Cordelia's theatrical debut. She’s not very good. On the way home from the theatre, they come across celebrities exiting a movie premiere.

As Angel watches, Rebecca Lowell, a famous television actress, is almost run over by a speeding car. Angel rushes forward and shoves her out of the way, saving her life. Rebecca thanks Angel for saving her life. The media shows up and Angel vanishes. A thoroughly starstruck Cordelia gives Rebecca their card in case she ever needs anything.

Rebecca shows up at Angel's office. She's intrigued by the fact that Angel has never heard of her or seen a single episode of her TV series. She asks Angel for some help with a stalker that she seems to have acquired. Angel has already been investigating the car that tried to run her down the previous evening. However, he refuses to take her case. Wesley deduces that Angel likes Rebecca and is afraid of getting too close. Cordelia is upset that her chance at knowing a celebrity has been ruined by Angel's "intimacy issues". Instead, Angel watches her from a distance.

When a masked man bursts into her home and attacks her, Angel rushes in to save the day. In the aftermath, Angel and Rebecca glance up at her wall length mirror and she realizes he has no reflection. Once the police and Rebecca's entourage have left the scene, she heads upstairs to talk to the still lurking Angel. She's figured out that he's a vampire and she's not afraid. Angel is stunned by her lack of fear. He agrees to stay the night.

The next morning, Wesley informs Cordelia that Angel called and they've taken the case. Cordelia realizes that if he spent the night at Rebecca's, he may have slept with her and lost his soul. She heads over there to check on them and Angel tells her that he told Rebecca the truth. Rebecca meets with Oliver, her agent, and is told her career is floundering now that her series is off the air. She asks Angel to attend a movie premiere as her bodyguard.

At the premiere they go in the front door of the theatre and immediately head out the back alley. An assassin shoots at them. Angel leaps for the gunman and knocks him out. As the police are going over the scene, Oliver shows up. Rebecca tells him she knows that he's behind the stalker. He was a stuntman that Oliver used to represent. Oliver set the whole thing up as a publicity stunt. Oliver tells her that she lost the job she had been campaigning for because she was felt to be too mature. Oliver tells her that reality is no one stays young forever. Rebecca glances over at Angel with a speculative gleam. Angel informs Wesley that the assassin last night was using blanks. He's not sure what to tell Rebecca. Rebecca, meanwhile, takes Cordelia shopping and pumps her for information on Angel.

Later that night, Rebecca shows up at Angel's apartment with a bottle of champagne she bought as a thank you gift for Angel. Angel tells her about the stalker not being real. She reveals what Oliver had done and that she lost the part. She and Angel drink the champagne. She spills some “accidentally” on Angel and while he is out of the room, she slips a powder into Angel's glass. Angel comes back and finishes his drink. Cordelia calls Wesley, very concerned as she realizes that Rebecca was trying to find out how to become a vampire.

Angel now seems drunk. Rebecca is trying to seduce him. She tries to convince him to turn her into a vampire. Angel gets violently angry and he grabs Rebecca dragging her over to the refrigerator. He pulls out a bag of blood so that she can taste what eternity feels like. He shrinks back in horror at his actions. Something is wrong with him. He asks her what she's done. He realizes that she must have put something in her drink. She tells him it was just a little happy pill to relax him, to lower his defenses. Angel bites her and pulls away.

Angelus has taken over. He's thrilled to be released and torments Rebecca. She fights back and escapes in the elevator, when she enters the office she finds Cordelia and Wesley. As she explains what happened, the lights go out. Angelus has cut the power and phone lines. Wesley tries to reason with Angelus, explaining that this is all a temporary condition due to the effects of the drug. Angelus merely laughs, telling Wesley how inferior he is and he flings Wesley across the room. He then turns on Cordelia mocking her acting abilities. Cordelia takes Angelus on brandishing a glass she claims holds holy water. Angelus isn’t entirely convinced. Cordelia continues her bluff, managing to distract him with a detailed account of how she's planned for this day. Wesley leaps forward knocking Angelus down the elevator shaft.

Angel awakes the next morning chained to the bed. Things are very tense between the three of them. Wesley and Cordelia agree to forget what was said. It was after all the drugs talking, not Angel. Angel is grateful for their understanding. They do, however, leave him chained to the bed. Just in case.

Dialogue

WesleyWe're doomed.
AngelMaybe we can make a break for it.
WesleyImpossible.
AngelFront exit?
WesleyThey'd spot us instantly.
AngelBack door?
WesleyBlocked.
AngelThat's it then. We're trapped.
WesleyWe might try shouting fire...It's not technically a crowded theater.
AngelAnd I thought I knew eternity.
CordeliaAngel? Was I good?
AngelI wouldn't say it if I didn't think so.
CordeliaThanks! You didn't say it.
AngelHey, you know, it was a night in the theater I'll never forget.
CordeliaI was working him all night, and he gave you his card?
AngelHe thought I had a quality.
CordeliaShe played Raven in "On Your Own." Big hit television show? It was only on for, like, 9 1/2 years. Do either of you even own a television?
CordeliaIt was a seminal show. Canceled by the idiot network. I was gonna picket them, but I didn't have any comfortable shoes.
R
RebeccaAre you alright?
CordeliaOh, he's fine. It was such an honor to save your life, Miss Lowell.
R
RebeccaOliver, down. He doesn't know who I am.
CordeliaHe's culturally retarded that way.
R
RebeccaDo you make a habit of this sort of thing, Angel?
CordeliaOh, it's only, like, his purpose in life. Angel's the Dark Avenger. Only not too dark. Happy dark!
R
RebeccaOh, God. Who called ET?
WesleyEmma Thompson?
CordeliaI'm in the picture.
WesleyWhere?
CordeliaRight there.
WesleyWhere?
CordeliaRight there. Next to Rebecca. That's my elbow!
CordeliaRebecca Lowell hasn't had a series since " On Your Own" was canceled. And that was almost a season-and-a-half ago!
WesleyAnd they say there are no seasons in Los Angeles.
CordeliaWe have to use this now, before she's just another E! True Hollywood Story!
R
RebeccaCan we talk?
AngelSure, right in here.

Rebecca (to her bodyguards): Stay.

Angel (to Wes & Cordy): Stay.

R
RebeccaYou're not fond of sunshine.
AngelI'm a night person.
R
RebeccaYou never really saw even one single episode of "On Your Own"?
AngelNo.
R
RebeccaHuh. Well, stop by. I'll give you a private screening of the episode I didn't win the Emmy for.
CordeliaMy first big connection in Hollywood, and you practically throw her outta the office. Haven't you ever heard of networking?
CordeliaHe can fight off donkey demons who rip people's guts out, but he can't help one defenseless actress from a psycho? What is your thing?!
WesleyHe likes her. He's afraid to get close.
Cordelia'Cuz of his curse? You'd have to get awfully close for that to kick in. In the meantime, you could be helping me.
WesleyThe person who needs help here is Miss Lowell.
CordeliaRight! He could be helping us both. Think of the karma!
CordeliaOh no! Not now! Aah! What's this I see in my vision? Ooh! It's a figure. A woman! It's Rebecca. She's in danger. Terrrrible danger...Great. Just great. Because Mr. Distant has intimacy issues, I lose my brush with fame.
AngelCordelia, she's just a person.
CordeliaSpoken like a true non-person.
AngelI'm not what you think.
R
RebeccaYou're not? Because -- no reflection, dark private office, instantly knowing those letters weren't written in blood -- I guess what I would think is...vampire.
AngelThen again...
R
RebeccaWhich is impossible. Bela Lugosi, Gary Oldman -- they're vampires.
AngelFrank Langella was the only performance I believed.
R
RebeccaDo you drink blood?
AngelYeah. But not people.
R
RebeccaYou're not a killer.
AngelI gave that up.
R
RebeccaWell, there's a support group for everything in this town, I guess.
CordeliaDid he spend the night?
WesleyOne assumes.
CordeliaGreat, he spent the night with the fantasy of millions. All alone. "Protecting" her.
WesleyYou're worried about the curse. I wouldn't be.
CordeliaHey, you weren't around the last time Angel went mental. I, on the other hand, was on the first wave of the clean-up crew.
CordeliaHe knows perfect happiness. He goes evil. So don't tell me not to worry.
WesleyAngel's moment of true happiness occurred because he was with Buffy. Do you realize how rare that is? True happiness? And what are the odds he'd find it with an actress.
CordeliaWhat's that supposed to mean?
WesleyI was...ah...I meant TV actress.
CordeliaI owe it to that poor girl to see if he ended up chowing down on my one link to fame.
AngelCordelia. You're here. And...you brought a cross.
CordeliaAnd along with three double half-caf non-fat skinny lattes.
AngelAnd a cross.
CordeliaWell, judging by the outfit, I guess it's safe to come in. Evil Angel never would have worn those pants.
CordeliaSo she went to lunch and just left you here to rummage through her things?
AngelNo. I told her I was a vampire and that daytime patio dining was out.
CordeliaDid you just make a joke?
R
RebeccaSuddenly, I'm nobody again.
AngelNot according to these.
R
RebeccaAccording to those, I've slept with Ernest Borgnine. And I'm bulimic.
AngelI hear Borgnine's a very skilled lover.
CordeliaYou must have a ton of friends you could have asked.
R
RebeccaYes, but none of them would know what to buy a 200-year-old vampire as a thank-you gift.
CordeliaOh my God, he is impossible to buy for. What on earth does he need, more socks?
R
RebeccaHow did he become what he is?
CordeliaOh God, you got 8 hours?
R
RebeccaWow, it's sort of what you'd expect -- and sort of not.
AngelThere's no coffin.
CordeliaI think I may have done something terrible. I went shopping with Rebecca.
WesleyAnd that was terrible?
CordeliaHuh? No! That was fantastic -- did you know they close off stores for her?
WesleyYou don't think...
CordeliaWhat? That she'd try to maneuver Angel into an exchange of bodily fluids in order to make herself eternally young and beautiful thus saving her failing career? Gee, now that you mention it...
R
RebeccaCordelia says you've saved the world.
AngelCouple times I helped. But I almost had it sucked into Hell once, too.
A
AngelusOh, God, I love this stuff. Wow! Remind me to get the name of your dealer before I kill you.
A
AngelusIn all my years, I never killed a famous person before. But with no witnesses, hey, who's going to believe me? Maybe we could take a picture. I know! We'll do it like we did back in the day. I'll keep your head on a stick as proof.
R
RebeccaMy head on a stick?
A
AngelusWell, okay -- pike.
A
AngelusBoy, you know, you could stand to lose a few pounds. Hey, I'll help you with that.
R
RebeccaI just wanted to...
A
AngelusBe like me? Hey, can't say I blame you. I'm one happy fellow.
A
AngelusTell you what. I'll torture ya for a few unbelievably long hours, and you can tell me if this is the lifestyle for you.
R
RebeccaI may have given him something to help loosen him up. And now he's...
CordeliaLoose?!?
WesleyWhat did you give him?
R
RebeccaDoes it matter?
CordeliaWell if he's all homicidal, I'm thinking YEAH!
A
AngelusName's Angelus.
WesleyI don't wish to resort to drastic measures. But unless you listen to reason, I warn you...
A
AngelusYou're warning me? What happened, Wes? You suddenly grow a pair?
A
AngelusGood news, Wes Old Boy! You don't have an inferiority complex. You're just simply inferior.
CordeliaWhy don't you just...just...
A
AngelusJust just just just...Line! "Of course, a time will come...when Torvald is not as devoted...to me." You were really, let me tell you, bad.
CordeliaStop it.
A
AngelusWhy? You didn't. I mean, I've been to Hell, but that was so much worse.
A
AngelusYou had to be there. There wasn't a dry eye in the house, everybody was just laughing so hard.
A
AngelusHere's a thought. Maybe you could get Raven here to coach you, then you'd actually suck.
CordeliaBack off.
A
AngelusWhat're you gonna do? Melt me?
A
AngelusThat's just drinking water.
CordeliaFresh from a mountain spring, delivered right to our door, then blessed every second Tuesday by Father Mackie, the local parish priest, while you're down in the bat cave sleeping through the better part of the day. Don't believe me? [throws the water] And the Oscar goes to...
CordeliaAre you still evil?
AngelI'm so sorry.
CordeliaCan I get another reading on that line, please?
AngelI need to apologize to both of you.
WesleyThere's really no need.
CordeliaUh, hello?
AngelCordelia...
CordeliaOkay, here's something I never thought I would say to you: Wesley's right.
CordeliaAngelus may not be the most relaxing company, but at least he's honest! Shouldn't I expect the same from the non-evil version of my friends?
AngelSo we're okay then?
CordeliaI'm too big of a person to let something so petty get in the way of our friendship.
AngelI appreciate that...You're not going to untie me, are you?
CordeliaPffft!
AngelWesley? Cordelia? Guys?
