Summary

Faith, the rogue Slayer, arrives in L.A., and Wolfram and Hart make plans to use her in their fight against Angel.

Plot

At nighttime, under a bridge, Marquez approaches a huddle of people surrounding a fire in a bucket. An arm holding a gun is tossed into a fire, by a demon. The demons have cut up Marquez’s friends, and are now setting the remains on fire. Marquez runs as three demons chase him. Marquez shoots at them from over his shoulder as he runs, with no result. Wesley, driving Angel’s convertible, also starts chasing Marquez. Angel beheads one of the demons as they drive past, to cut off Marquez escape. Angel was apparently looking for a Marquez, which Marquez confirms is his name. Angel beheads another demon.

At the incoming-traffic bus stop, a busload of people get off the bus. Included in the crowd is a girl in platform shoes, with a duffel bag. The girl is Faith. A man with a cigarette offers seedily to give Faith a place to stay. Faith attacks the man, until he is unconscious. Faith steals his wallet, keys to his home, and jacket.

A Flashback to Borsca, Romania, in 1898: Darla leads Angelius into a home, with Angelius in a blindfold. After removing Angelius’ blindfold, Darla wishes him a happy birthday and lets him vamp out on a bound and gagged gypsy girl.

In Angel’s office, Angel is telling Marquez to do the right thing, or else next time the demons will be chopping Marquez up and incinerating his remains.

Outside Angel’s office, Cordy and Wesley argue over whether or not Marquez is going to do it. Cordy believes that her vision that helped save Marquez life was a waste of a vision. Wesley believes Marquez will testify. Briefly, Marquez tries to leave, before Angel pulls him back into the office.

Inside Angel’s office, Angel tells Marquez that he’s going to have to face his demons sooner or later.

At a bar, Faith is dancing with guy after guy. Eventually, Faith is dancing with Billy, which upsets Billy’s girlfriend, whom Faith knocks out. This upsets Billy, who tries to attack Faith, but ends up hitting another guy. A fight erupts, as more and more bar patrons join in. Faith, still dancing, punches and kicks the odd-person.

In a courtroom, during the day, Lindsey points out that if the district attorney has no witnesses, there is no case against his client. Angel and Marquez show up, and Marquez is called to the stand as a witness against Lindsey’s client.

Later, in Lindsey’s office, Lindsey is explaining to a superior why his client lost the case. Lindsey agrees that Angel is costing Wolfram & Hart money. Lee Mercer enters, and presents Lindsey with some papers, claiming a solution to their problems.

In the lobby, Lilah approaches Mercer and applauds his idea of using Faith to kill Angel. Unfortunately for Mercer, Lilah is the only one who knows where Faith is, so Lilah gets to make contact with Faith.

At Angel Investigations HQ, Cordelia agrees to meet a client over a divorce case, because it is a high-paying case. Angel and Wesley show up, announcing that Marquez testified and they won. Wesley suggests ominously that Wolfram & Hart might want to get back at Angel.

Faith and Lilah walk out of a bar together. Faith is not eager to trust Lilah, but Lilah seems intent on talking to Faith. Mercer opens the door of the black limousine, letting Faith and Lilah get in.

A Flashback: Darla walks into a room, to find Angel huddled against a wall. Angel looks ragged and sickly. Angel reveals that the gypsy girl he ate on his birthday had a family, who found out about her death and cursed Angel with a soul. Darla is disgusted, breaks a chair, and tries to stake Angel. After several failed attempts to kill Angel, Darla kicks him out of the home.

In Wolfram & Hart, Lilah, Lindsey, and Mercer are explaining that it would be in their best interest if Faith killed a man named Angel, but they don’t want to be connected to his death. In return, Wolfram & Hart can get Faith off of her murder charges. Faith is also interested in the amount of money she’ll get. Mercer’s method of explaining makes Faith angry, so she begins pounding his face into a nearby table. Lilah notes Faith’s initiative.

Angel, Cordy and Wesley are on their way to meet their client, when Cordy reveals that their case is actually a divorce case. From behind the group, Faith shoots a crossbow bolt at Angel, who turns around in time to catch the shot in his chest. Faith seems excited, as she runs away from Angel, into sunlight. Cordy notes that Faith isn’t in a coma anymore.

At Angel Investigations HQ, after Angel talks with Giles on the phone, tells Cordy and Wesley that Faith left Sunnydale a week ago, and she wasn’t entirely sane. Angel tells Cordy and Wesley to look for recent beatings or killings in police reports. After that, to go away, so Faith doesn’t try and hurt Cordy or Wesley. Angel accepts that by the end, either Faith or himself will be dead. Reluctantly, Wesley accepts this grim news.

After Cordy and Wesley are gone, Angel is in the basement when somebody opens the blinds in Angel’s office. It’s Faith. Faith throws Angel a gun, which Angel aims at her leg and shoots. Faith, uninjured, suggests that maybe the gun is filled with blanks. Faith explains that she’s getting paid to kill Angel, and then shoots the gun at Angel, this time with a real bullet. Faith jumps out through the window, shattering the glass.

Angel, dressed in a suit and carrying a briefcase, walks into Wolfram & Hart, disguised as a lawyer. A lawyer mistakes Angel for somebody who works at W&H, only compounding his disguise.

Inside Lindsey’s office, Angel roots through Lindsey’s papers. When Lindsey walks in, Angel asks him where Faith is. Lindsey denies knowing Faith, but does inform Angel that security is aware of Angel’s presence. Angel knocks out a security guard, before grabbing his briefcase and leaving.
While entering Cordelia’s apartment, phantom Dennis blocks the door. Cordelia coaxes Dennis to let herself and Wesley in, where Faith is hiding. Faith knocks out Cordy, and Wesley punches Faith. Faith kicks Wesley, sending him flying across the room.

A Flashback: During the night, a woman and three men leave an Inn, to find Angel standing outside. Angel vamps out, and the three men drag him into an alley. Angel beats up the three men and then bites the woman.

Angel enters Cordy’s apartment, to find Cordy lying on the floor. It seems that Faith has kidnapped Wesley.

In the smoker’s home, Faith is torturing Wesley, who is gagged and bound to a chair. After using blunt objects, Faith smashes a picture frame, intent on using the sharp glass for torturing Wesley.

In Cordy’s house, Angel and Cordy examine a map of L.A., which all of Faith’s recent attacks outlined. Angel deduces that Faith is living in the one guy’s home, whose wallet and keys Faith stole.

In the smoker’s home, Wesley is still bound and gagged, with his shirt now covered in bloodstains. Faith starts questioning Fate. Using a lighter and a spray can, Faith creates a miniature flame-thrower, which she is about to use on Wesley when the door bursts of it’s hinges. Angel walks in, and Faith holds a knife to Wesley’s throat.

A Flashback: Angel, now with a soul, cannot feed on the woman without feeling really guilty. The woman flees.

In the smoker’s home, Angel and Faith are facing off, while she holds Wesley hostage. Wesley throws his chair back, and Angel kicks Faith away from Wesley. Faith grabs a piece of wood to stake Angel, but loses it when Angel throws her on the sofa. Faith kicks a table, covered in glass, at Angel. Faith and Angel continue to fight, while Wesley saws his way out of his bonds. Eventually, Faith is outside, pummelling Angel during a downpour. Wesley, freed of his rope, grabs a butcher’s knife and runs outside. Faith begins crying, and Angel hugs her. Wesley drops the knife, as it rains and thunder is heard from the background.

Dialogue

AngelName Marquez?...Good. I hate saving the wrong guy.
A
AngelusCan I take off this blindfold yet?
DarlaNo.
A
AngelusCan I take off something else?
DarlaHappy Birthday, Angelus.
A
AngelusShe's a gypsy.
DarlaI looked everywhere.
A
AngelusWhat would I do without you?
DarlaWither and die. But she's not just for you. I get to watch.
AngelNext time they come after you, I'm not going to be there. And your friends aren't going to be there either -- not after being cut up and incinerated.
CordeliaI knew it when you brought him in last night. Someone with that much body art is gonna have a different definition of civic duty.
WesleyAfter we saved his life?
CordeliaWhen was the last time you wrote a thank you card?
CordeliaWesley, you don't change a guy like that. In fact, generally speaking, you don't change a guy. What you see is what you get. Scratch the surface, and whaddya find? More surface.
CordeliaWhat's Angel gonna do, drag a bunch of them in here to shove a soul down this guy's throat?
WesleyHe may be a ruffian. But he's already got a soul, and therefore, somewhere deep down inside, an urge to do what's right.
M
MarquezNo way, I'm gone.
AngelShut up and sit down.
CordeliaI guess you're right Wesley. He's just like the Dalai Lama.
AngelYou're gonna have to face your demons some time.
M
MarquezWhat if I don't want to face my demons?
AngelThen you'll have to face mine.
L
LindseyI request a dismissal of all charges against my client, whose reputation has been irreparably damaged by these proceedings. He's a law-abiding and upstanding. . . citizen.
AngelYour client really is. Except for that pesky drug dealing and murder stuff.
L
LindseyI hate failure when there's no one else to blame it on.
CordeliaUnfortunately, we don't really do divorce cases. No, it's not about the money. Oh! It's about that much money! How soon can we meet?
CordeliaHow'd it go?
WesleyWe won.
CordeliaGang Guy testified?
AngelStood up and told the truth.
CordeliaWhat did I tell you?
WesleyThat he never would.
CordeliaYou can always tell when he's happy. His scowl? Slightly less scowl-y.
AngelNot everyone screams.
DarlaWhat?
AngelWhen you kill 'em. Some just stand there, frozen. While others. . . .
DarlaWhat are you doing? Are we playing a game?
AngelThe children -- they usually scream.
DarlaYes. They sound just like little pigs. Have you brought me some?
AngelFunny. You'd think with all the people I've maimed and killed, I wouldn't be able to remember Every. Single. One.
L
LindseyTo make a long story less long, I think for services rendered, we can get you off.
FaithYou don't know how many men have promised me that.
CordeliaIt's not the kind of case I'd normally go after, but we've got to consider the bottom line.
AngelWhat kind of demons are we dealing with?
CordeliaWell, it's not exactly a "demon thing.
WesleyWhat kind of "thing" is it?
CordeliaIt's a . . . kind of. . . husband-and-wife break-up thing.
WesleyA divorce case?
AngelYou're kidding.
CordeliaWhat's wrong with a divorce case?
AngelIt's not what we do.
CordeliaAccording to the husband, the wife's a real witch.
WesleySeems a bit on the seedy side.
CordeliaThis is not seedy. He's in government.
CordeliaOh, and we should pick up the tab for lunch. Nothing says success less than splitting the bill.
AngelI didn't bring any money with me.
CordeliaOkay, Elvis, when you're a big star, you can get away without carrying cash.
CordeliaAnd while we're on the subject, I think one of us should apply for a small business loan. Just to get us through the rough spots. I mean, what's a 30-year loan to you?
FaithThat was so cool! This is gonna be fun.
WesleyOh my god, Faith.
AngelI thought she was in a coma.
CordeliaPretty lively coma.
AngelGiles said she left Sunnydale about a week ago. Described her mental state as borderline psychotic.
CordeliaThat explains her outfit.
WesleyThis isn't right.
CordeliaWhen a whacked out Slayer tries to kill your boss, it's very wrong.
WesleyI meant Giles. Why didn't he give me the heads up? I was Faith's Watcher. When she came out of her coma, Giles should have contacted me immediately.
CordeliaMaybe he was busy trying to keep her from, I don't know, killing everybody?
AngelMake yourselves scarce. I don't want to give her any free targets.
WesleyYou've been targeted by a psychotic. I'm certainly not going to run and hide.
CordeliaI like the plan where I'm scarce.
WesleyWe've got to band together. Strength in numbers.
CordeliaTwo's a number.
WesleyIt seems you're taking this personally.
AngelShe tried to shoot my own personal back, so yeah.
WesleyShe's not a demon. She's a sick, sick girl. If there's even a chance she can be reasoned with...
AngelThere was. Last year, I had a shot at saving her. I was pulling her back from the brink when some British guy kidnapped her and made damn sure she'd never trust another living soul.
CordeliaAngel, it's not Wesley's fault that "some British guy" ruined your...oh wait. That was you. Go on.
WesleyYou don't need to.
FaithHey, baby. Come give us a hug.
AngelI was hoping you'd stop by. Always good to see old friends.
FaithYou didn't shoot to kill! We're gonna have to up the stakes. Get you in the game a little.
AngelWhat's the game, exactly, Faith? Boredom? Revenge?
FaithDude, I'm getting paid. They hate you almost as much as I do.
AngelIt ever occur to you this might be more fun for me?
FaithYa think? Cuz, what if you kill me? Experience that one true moment of pleasure. Oops! I'd get off on that. Go ahead. Do me. Let's take that hell ride together.
AngelWhere's Faith?
L
LindseyShould I know what you're talking about?
AngelYour new employee.
L
LindseyIt's a big firm. Tell you what I can do, I can give you the number to personnel, though. I'm sure they'd be glad to handle your problem.
AngelYou'd remember this one -- pretty, dark hair, kills things.
AngelToo bad the body burned up before it hit the ground. I mighta needed a good lawyer.
L
LindseyI'm sorry. We only handle a certain class of clientele.
AngelI'm sure I've killed enough people to qualify.
L
LindseyYou know, just when I think I've got you figured out, you show up in a suit.
WesleyA woman fitting Faith's description was involved--however, not arrested.
CordeliaShe charm her way out?
WesleyNo. Apparently, she managed to break a policeman's jaw with his own handcuffs before she disappeared into the night.
CordeliaOh. For Faith, that is charm.
CordeliaPhantom Dennis, let us in. It's alright. It's only Wesley.
WesleyDennis your ghost, I presume?
CordeliaYes. He's jealous. [to Dennis] Don't worry, hell will freeze over before I have sex with him.
WesleyThank goodness for small favors.
CordeliaI'm gonna pack a bag.
WesleyCordelia, please. Just a few things. We're not going on safari.
FaithDon't poop out on me, dammit! Otherwise this is all just gonna be over too fast. You'll be dead, and I'll be...bored.
FaithNow, we've only done one of the five basic torture groups. We've done blunt, but that still leaves sharp, cold, hot, and loud. Have a preference?
FaithOh, that's great. It's always better with audience participation. May I take your order please?
WesleyI was your Watcher Faith. I know the real you. And even if you kill me, there's just one thing I want you to remember.
FaithWhat's that, love?
WesleyYou...are a piece of shi-
FaithFace it, Wesley, you really were a jerk. Always walking around like you had some great big stake rammed up your English Channel.
FaithAdmit it, Wesley, didn't you always kind of have the hots for me?
FaithHow do I know you're really in this? I mean, if I kill him, would that help? Or just be really funny?
AngelBy the way, you never told me how much I'm worth dusted, just out of curiosity.
Faith$15,000 plus expenses.
AngelYou're kidding.
FaithHey, I'm young. I'm gonna work my way up.
AngelYou feel young, do you, Faith? You're looking pretty worn out to me.
